So the National Forests are closed, now what!? Can you still visit the western Sierra this Labor Day Weekend!? Short answer, ABSOLUTELY!
Yosemite National Park is OPEN and NOT affected by the National Forest closure. Advanced day-use reservations are required to enter. Day-use passes to Yosemite National Park can be reserved through September 30th (based on availability) and a week before arrival. Please check out their website before making a reservation. No reservation? No problem! Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks are OPEN and NOT affected by the closure of neighboring national forests on September 1, 2021. There are trail closures on the Tar Gap Trail, Atwell Mill Trail, the South Fork Trail, and in wilderness near the southern park boundary. Fire danger is extremely high. Stage 3 fire restrictions are in effect as of July 1. No smoking is allowed outside of vehicles. Wood and charcoal fires (including wood-burning stoves) are prohibited throughout the parks at all elevations.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park is OPEN. Effective immediately, August 18, 2021, and through December 31, 2021, or until rescinded. Campfires, devices fueled by wood or charcoal, and liquid fueled torches prohibited for all campground and day use areas in the park.
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park is OPEN daily until 4:30pm. Train rides are running on the weekends, tickets can be found here.
Columbia State Historic Park is OPEN! Many merchants and restaurants are open with limited capacity and face coverings required indoors if not vaccinated in the museum and visitors center.
California State Mining and Mineral Museum is OPEN from Thursday through Sunday in Mariposa, CA.
Wassama Round House State Historic Park is partially OPEN. Park Day -Use and Special are all currently open.
Millerton Lake State Recreation Area is partially OPEN due to COVID 19 restrictions. The Parking, Day-Use Areas, Boat Launch and Marina Access, Campgrounds, Guided tours and special events are currently open!
There is so much to do along the western slope of the Sierra and all private, state and National Park campgrounds are open!
